An Init Caster, also known as an IC, is a cylindrical shaped device that fits into the bearer's hand. Upon initialization, the IC grows to a height of approximately 3'. The tip of the IC is applied to an open socket on the surface of a sleeping Vérkatros, whereupon is receives a jolt of energy and is awakened.
Only Slaves are able to initialize an IC because of the fact that they can only do so by being connected to the Tenddrome, through which they interface with the device and send commands.
Fredrick witnesses the Sleeper Class Vérkatra
Although the Init Caster is used mostly on Vérkatrae to wake them up, they are also used to gain access to the Slipshot Silo.
An Init Caster was also used once by Betel Longshrew Piper on Fredrick Munchen after he witnessed several Sleeper Class Vérkatrae, and as a result, had fallen into a panic. With the help of Jillian Crenshaw, Fredrick was brought to Temple Pizza where Betel and Matere Songgaard provided care.
Fredrick’s eyes turned up inside their sockets. He gasped for air.
“Fredrick,” said Betel, her voice more urgent. “I need you to focus. I need you here with me.” She looked over her shoulder towards Matere, who stood behind her. “Matere, I think we need to use the IC.”
“The Init Caster? Are you sure?”
“What else? He’s gone into a state of sheer panic.”
“But the IC is used for initializing a Vérkatros. How will that help here?”
“If he’s seen a Vérkatros while it was maintaining its obfuscation protocols, then his perception of reality could be permanently warped. We need to pull him out of his current perception state and back to his normal perception state. We don’t want to leave him with permanent damage. Or the inability to escape his present reality.”
Matere sighed deeply. “It might be dangerous, Betel.”
“I think it’s our only option, Matere.” Betel’s cool, gray eyes softened.[1]
