Cythiria Crenshaw appears in Vol 1.0 of the Slipshot saga. She is on of a class of Slaves called Mechanics, or more formally, Mechanic Class Slaves. Her origin, like all Slave Classes, is Griddish, a wide, domed disk that is floating in a separate dimension is deep space. Within Griddish, she hails from the city of Ashen Fissure. She lives, along with other Mechanic Class Slaves, in a walled fortress known as Sanguine Heap.
Description[]
In Slipshot Vol 1.0 Cythiria is a child of approximately 8 Varling years. Although she is a Mechanic Class Slave, she is still in training. She is seen observing Slave activity in Griddish, but much of what she learns she obtains from access to the Tenddrome, of which all Slaves are a Node.
Cythiria meets Fredrick and Jillian for the first time.
Cythiria first meets Fredrick Munchen and Jillian Crenshaw when they arrive in Griddish in their attempt to prevent the final dismantlement of Var 8, Earth, which was led by Mechanic Class Slave Opal Fremmitty. At first, she is suspicious of the newcomers but soon forms a connection to them.
Cythiria understands that Fredrick and Jillian are not normal citizens of Griddish, even though Jillian tries to claim that she and Fredrick are Engineer Class Citizens. Instead, Cythiria insists that the two are too kind hearted to be Engineer Class Citizens, but instead, that they are Nodes who are lost. She communicate to them that other Nodes who have met them describe them as "very poor Engineer Class Citizens."[1]
Cythiria is a young Mechanic Class Slave of approximately 8 Varling years. As such, she observes many of the activities that go on at Griddish so that she can learn and become an effective Mechanic. Because of her youth, she is the most connected to the Tenddrome, which is the technical space to which all Slaves are connected, and through which they are connected to each other. As she described to Fredrick and Jillian towards the end of Vol 1.0, "All Slaves see through the eyes of other Slaves, ...It is how we exist, as Nodes within the Tenddrome.”[2]
While Fredrick and Jillian are stranded on Griddish, Rive Amber sends the Vérkatrae to Var 8 and she declares war on the Engineer Class Citizens, sending an array of Constructor Class Vérkatrae against them. Fredrick and Jillian witness the last moments of peace on Griddish.
However, Rive Amber has other plans for Fredrick and Jillian. She delivers them to the Slipshot bound to Var 7, a Beauty World that is a twin to Var 8. It is known as Var 7, Farth. She offers them a new life. However, they must bring Cythiria with them. Says Rive as they part company, "One day, I will return for her. She is the future of us Slaves. She must survive."[3]
Cythiria arrives on Var 7 with Fredrick and Jillian.
Cythiria falls through the Slipshot to Var 7 with Fredrick and Jillian. Rive Amber then shuts down the Slipshot Silo. Cythiria is immediately isolated from the Tenddrome and as a result, she experiences a painful burning sensation on her forehead. The result are two small wounds that glow with fire and eventually form into scars that stay with her for the rest of her life. Her ability to connect to the Tenddrome, as Slaves have done for eons, has been permanently damaged.
Appearance[]
In Slipshot Vol 1.0, Cythiria is a child who is 3' 1". Her age is approximately 8 Varling years. While on Griddish, she wears the gear of other Mechanic Class Slaves, which is intended to aid them in their maintenance of the Vérkatrae and the Slipshot.
Personality[]
In Slipshot Vol 1.0, Cythiria is a generally quiet person who spends most of her time observing and learning to adapt to the world of Griddish, and later on, to Var 7, Farth. In Vol 2.0, Cythiria is a rebellious teenager who struggles to discover her own identity in a strange world.
Relationships[]
In Vol 1.0, Cythiria's primary relationships are Fredrick Munchen and Jillian Crenshaw. In Vol 2.0, Cythiria forms relationships with a fellow student and Varling named Chelss Brimwater on Var 7, and Judith Merlon, Admin Class Slave on Griddish. Rive Amber arrives at Var 7 and becomes Cythiria's mentor, teaching her how to fight and be strong as she prepares her for her eventual return to Griddish. After she returns to Griddish, she forms a close relationship with a Vérkatros named Blinky. She is believed to be the first Slave to form such a relationship with a Vérkatros.
She also has a mysterious relationship with Matere Songgaard, who claims in Vol 2.0 that she is one of his inventions, and that she was granted special insight into the Vérkatrae because of his experiments.
Alliances[]
Cythiria's alliances include Fredrick Munchen and Jillian Crenshaw, who are her adoptive parents while they are stranded on Var 7. In Vol 2.0, as a teenager of 17 years, she is a martial arts student to Rive Amber on Var 7 and she considers her her mentor. She forms a tenuous romantic relationship with Varling Chelss Brimwater and Admin Class Slave Judith Merlon. After she returns to Griddish, she forms a close friendship with a Vérkatros named Blinky.
Enemies[]
Cythiria has no personal enemies, however, she has a mysterious relationship with Matere Songgaard, who claims she is a product of his Ante Bellum experiments on her, which gave her special insight into the Vérkatrae.
